Background
elbranstalk is a non-profit academic community dedicated to the critical and multidisciplinary development of Qur’anic and Islamic Studies. Established on April 1, 2024, coinciding with 21 Ramadan 1445 H, the community emerged from a student-led initiative in response to the intellectual atmosphere of Ramadan, seeking to provide an open discussion platform through social media. Its founding spirit was rooted in the need for an inclusive and reflective forum—one that operates beyond rigid academic formality while upholding scholarly integrity.
The name elbranstalk is a creative acronym combining linguistic and intellectual elements: el refers both to the Greek definite article and the Arabic ism ma‘rifah, merged with a wordplay on brains and talk. This fusion reflects the community’s aspiration to cultivate a discursive space that is thoughtful, critical, and communicative.
From its inception, elbranstalk did not position itself as a producer of pre-packaged scholarly content. Rather, it serves as a facilitator of discussion, exploring both popular and academic themes—including astronomy, neuroscience, literature, and ecology. Despite the thematic diversity, each conversation consistently gravitates toward deep reflection within the framework of Islamic and Qur’anic studies, forging a convergence between personal interests and academic inquiry.
The intellectual direction of elbranstalk began to crystallize with the public discussion event Tafsir Revolusi, which marked a pivotal shift in the community’s orientation. This transformation was further reinforced through elbranstalk’s participation in the 2024 Annual Conference of the Association for Qur’anic and Tafsir Studies (AIAT), which expanded the community’s access to national academic networks. During this engagement, elbranstalk had the opportunity to interact with prominent scholars, including Hamdi Putra Ahmad—an Oxford University alumnus—whose insights have significantly inspired and strengthened the community’s academic commitment.
