We believe that tafsir is not only the domain of classical scholars, but also an open field to be revisited, reimagined, and reworked within today’s context—if necessary, even through the lens of contemporary theories. Before submitting your work, please read these guidelines carefully. We don’t want your passion for writing to stumble on the basics.
1. Length
We value clarity and precision. Submissions should be between 500-700 words. Not longer, so it doesn’t read like a thesis abstract; not shorter, so it doesn’t feel like an Instagram caption.

2. Topics
You may write on any topic, but priority will be given to pieces within the scope of Islamic Studies, especially Qur’anic Studies and Tafsir. You can explore the meaning of a verse, methods of exegesis, the works of prominent scholars, or contemporary issues connected to the Qur’an. But remember—don’t just “retell.” Write as if you’re inviting readers to think with you, not merely to reread a campus handout.
Want to discuss Surah al-Baqarah from a feminist perspective? Go ahead. Analyze Quraish Shihab’s views on the environment? Excellent. Critique literalist interpretations? Sure, as long as it’s respectful. Even reviews are welcome—as long as they follow these points.
3. Analysis Required
This is non-negotiable: your article must employ at least one theory or analytical framework. It can be classical (Maqāṣid, Balāghah, Hermeneutics) or contemporary (feminism, deconstruction, postcolonialism, media theory). Don’t just cite a verse and call it a day. Build an argument, offer a perspective, and engage readers in thoughtful discussion.
4. Writing Style
We want writing with soul. Not an academic paper, not a sermon. Your tone can be witty, reflective, or even sharp—so long as it remains intelligent and concise. Use grounded language that carries meaning. Don’t sound pretentious, but don’t be overly casual either. Aim for balance—like a serious yet lively conversation over coffee.
5. Cite Your Sources
If you use theories, tafsir works, or scholarly opinions, mention the source and author. No need for lengthy footnotes; a simple in-text reference will do. And please, don’t quote “TikTok says.” We want your piece to spark conversations, not doubts about credibility.
