1. Background

In the discipline of Qur’anic studies and Tafsir, a book is never an isolated text. Each work represents a node in a wider chain of knowledge, shaped by earlier traditions and leaving its mark on later scholarship. For this reason, reading is not merely about comprehension; it is about situating a text within its intellectual genealogy.

elbranstalk’s Close Reading Program is designed to cultivate this deeper mode of engagement. Participants are guided to read a work with precision, trace the author’s intellectual influences, and map its reception and impact. More than that, Minbran facilitates access to related works that are often difficult to obtain individually, enabling participants to place the text in dialogue with broader scholarly conversations.

2. Objectives

The program seeks to:

  • Train participants in the art of reading a single text with depth, attention, and rigor.
  • Equip participants with the skills to identify the author’s intellectual lineage and scholarly influences.
  • Map the book’s position within the field: its contributions, its innovations, and the debates it has shaped.
  • Foster the habit of critical and contextualized writing through the production of a review article (1000–1500 words).
  • Strengthen scholarly networks and collaborative learning through guided discussions and shared resources.
3. Program Design

Duration: 12 sessions (1.5 hours per session, weekly).Format: Online via Zoom, combining guided close reading, collaborative discussion, and intellectual mapping exercises.

Phases of Learning:

  • Phase 1: Framing the Text. Introducing the author, their context, and the central questions of the book.
  • Phase 2: Reading the Text. Section-by-section engagement, identifying core arguments, methods, and textual strategies.
  • Phase 3: Intellectual Genealogy. Mapping the sources, traditions, and figures that influenced the author.
  • Phase 4: Scholarly Impact. Tracing the book’s reception: who it influenced, how it shaped debates, and where it stands in the genealogy of Qur’anic studies.
  • Phase 5: Scholarly Output. Participants prepare a 1000–1500 word review article that situates the text within its intellectual tradition.
4. Assignments and Evaluation
  • Weekly Reflections: Short notes (1–2 pages) responding to the week’s reading.
  • Intellectual Mapping: A visual or written chart of the book’s influences and impact.
  • Final Output: A review article (1000–1500 words), written in academic style, reflecting both close reading and contextual analysis.

Evaluation:

  • Active participation and attendance (20%)
  • Weekly reflections and mapping (40%)
  • Final review article (40%)
5. Materials and Access
  • Primary Source: One major text in Qur’anic studies or Tafsir (Arabic, English, or other relevant language).
  • Supporting Sources: Supplementary works curated and provided by Minbran to ensure participants have access to otherwise difficult-to-obtain materials.
7. Expected Outcomes
  • A deeper understanding of one major work in Qur’anic studies or Tafsir.
  • Competence in tracing intellectual genealogies: identifying influences and mapping scholarly impact.
  • A review article (1000–1500 words) as a tangible academic output.
  • Strengthened scholarly community through collective discussion and collaborative inquiry.
  • Greater access to key texts and resources through Minbran’s facilitation.
